Description

This introductory course is ideal for you if you have little or no experience of Forest Schools. It covers what the Forest School approach to learning is, how to participate in a Forest School experience, methods of identifying woodland species, the impact of Forest School on the woodland environment and hazards at Forest School.

What can I do next/once qualified?

Progress to the Level 3 Certificate in Forest School Programme Leadership.

Course Delivery & Assessment

Learners must attend both taught sessions and be prepared to work outside in all weathers.

Level 3 Certificate in Forest School Programme Leadership

Description

To undertake this Forest School Leadership qualification learners must already hold a Level 3 childcare related qualification, be over 21 and have a valid DBS check.

You will need to attend a programme of taught learning and run six forest school sessions between training days.

Upon completion of the course there is a requirement to have achieved two day outdoor first aid certificate.

The topics covered include:

  • How to plan appropriate outdoor activities and experiences aimed to promote participants' learning and development
  • How to plan these activities within the constraints of the setting, safety and the needs of participants, carers and staff
  • A wide range of practical skills including listening, movement, touch and sight
  • How to use the resources and how to set and use evaluation criteria including monitoring, observing and recording
  • Basic knots and lashings and recognition of natural shapes in wood to aid construction
  • How to build structures using natural materials to various designs
  • How to teach the safe use of tools, (pen knives / saws), including safety procedures and uses for each tool
  • How to supervise participants building and lighting fires to cook meals on, including safety procedures, the fire triangle, fuels and tinder.

What can I do next/once qualified?

You will be able to be a Forest School Leader providing you hold a valid DBS check and current outdoor first aid certificate.

Course Delivery & Assessment

You'll need to attend a programme of taught learning - please download the PDF or contact us to find out scheduled dates.

You are required to plan and deliver six of your own Forest School sessions between training days and build a portfolio of written evidence.

Your assessor will also set you written tasks and observe your practice in a Forest School environment.

Your work and progress towards achievement is recorded via an e-portfolio.
